Root Canal or Implant? / Clinical Applications of MTA

Presented by Professor Mahmoud Torabinejad DMD, MSD, PhD

We are delighted to announce that Professor Mahmoud Torabinejad will be presenting a lecture and hands-on workshop including live surgical demonstrations exclusively for CPD in Sydney in November 2009.

The lecture (a prerequisite for the workshop) incorporates two contemporary subjects:

Root canal or implant?

Advances in endosseous implants have had a significant effect on treatment planning in dentistry. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss factors involved in decision-making regarding selection of root canal treatment or dental implants. Indications and contraindications as well as the criteria used to determine the outcomes of root canal treatment and dental implants will be reviewed. In addition, success rates and the factors affecting the success of each treatment modality will be discussed. Current data indicates similar levels of clinical functionality over time for both treatments. Retention or removal of teeth should be based on thorough knowledge related to risk factors affecting the long-term prognosis of both root canal treatment and dental implants.

Topics include - Effects of new advances in dental implants on dentistry; criteria used to determine and factors affecting outcomes of root canal treatment and single-tooth implants.

Clinical applications of MTA

Existing filling materials do not possess “ideal” characteristics to seal the pathways of communication between the external surfaces of the teeth and the root canal system. Recently, a new material, Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA), has been compared in a series of in vitro and in vivo studies with existing materials. The results of these studies show that MTA can be used for pulp capping, apexogenesis and apexification, root perforations, root end filling for apical surgery and root canal filling material.

Topics include - success and failure of non-surgical and surgical root canal treatments; characteristics of ideal sealing materials; characteristics of MTA and other repair materials for pulp capping, pulpotomy, apical plug, root perforations, root end filling and root canal filling; how to use MTA.
