Practical Infection Control and Dental Sterilisation

A collaboration between CPD and TAFE NSW OTEN

Train new staff and refresh experienced staff

Part 1: Practical infection control lecture

Finding your way through the maze of infection control recommendations, suggestions and laws is difficult for the busy practice, especially when the experts seem to disagree. This course is designed to help you separate the science from the hype, the practical from the paranoia.

Dr Michael Payne has developed a set of practical procedures that work day-in and day-out in his surgery. Especially beneficial for new staff, this course provides the guidelines you need to develop effective systems that you will find logical and easy to implement.

Topics include

  • Wiping or wrapping?
  • Autoclaves and autoclaving - do I need a printer?
  • Is cold sterilising a thing of the past?
  • Staff immunisation guidelines
  • Sharps protocol, resheathing of needles
  • Instrument tracking and tracing
  • Avian Flu, Mad Cow disease and other infections
  • Handpiece care - reducing repair bills

Part 2: Dental sterilisation

Presented by TAFE NSW OTEN, participants will on completion of this unit be able to clean and sterilise reusable instruments and equipment and to maintain associated environments in the health care setting.

All procedures will be carried out in accordance with current infection control guidelines, Australia and New Zealand Standards and the policies and procedures of the health care establishment.

Students will

  • Clean and dry used items
  • Prepare and pack items for sterilisation
  • Sterilise loads
  • Maintain sterilising equipment

Upon the completion of this full day course, successful participants will have completed a full  competency towards the Dental Assisting Certificate III, and will gain a Transcript of Results from TAFE NSW OTEN, in addition to a Certificate of Participation from the ADA NSW Centre for Professional Development.

Attendance at this courses may assist with the assessment in the MRACDS  examination. The RACDS does not endorse any specific course or institution as the provider of all information required to successfully complete a MRACDS module.
