Medical Management in Periodontology

Presented by Professor Iain L. C. Chapple

This day will focus on the medical arm of human periodontal diseases in its broadest context. It will start with a heavily illustrated presentation that guides delegates through a diagnostic algorithm to enable practitioners to arrive at differential diagnoses for the many hundreds of systemic diseases that present in the mouth. The term “periodontal medicine” will be explored in its true context and not in the context of how periodontal inflammation impacts upon general health, but how general health can be assessed through careful study of the periodontal and associated soft tissues.

Professor Chapple will discuss the vital role of micro-nutrition in controlling inflammation within the body and in particular the periodontal tissues, and demonstrate how what we eat controls our gene expression (neutrigenomics). It will deal with the limited evidence base to date for the role of nutrition in periodontal pathogenesis and therapy, and how naturally arising bioactives have a powerful effect in modulating inflammation.

The afternoon session will deal with risk prediction as the foundation stone of preventive dentistry. Models of healthcare provision will be illustrated and the need to move towards a “wellness” model of care rather than a “repair” model will be evidenced. Key risk factors will be discussed and a novel online validated risk prediction system, which predicts future periodontal destruction and tooth loss with a high degree of accuracy, will be presented. The system will be demonstrated using a real-time web-based platform.

The final session will cover three short topics:

  • New paradigm in innate immunity
  • Association between periodontitis and premature mortality
  • Interactive session
